Whirring, then grinding noise, now speedo not working

Me too! I'd be very surprised if the speedo is cable driven but if it is, it can be disconnected in a minute or two and the noise should vanish.
Do let's know what happens!

Halfords? What do they know about cars? Take it to a proper garage with real mechanics. This fault does sound like the old Escort Mk 3 and 4 gearbox diff bearing problem. On those all the oil would leak out. OP's car is an auto and if the oil had leaked out I'd have expected the box to show symptoms.
 
I'd doubt if Halfords would fit your bill, but you never know! I would have thought any independent garage would put the car on the ramp for a drink - maybe worth checking out Kwik Fit if they are quiet......say you suspect the wheel bearings, as they do that repair :whistle:

Well I've just dropped it off with Halfords who suspect a bearing in the transmission so we'll see what they come back with...
 
Well the verdict is there's nothing obviously wrong, but suggest a gearbox specialist to look at it. What's weird is that since the speedo failed the noise is much more sporadic...

Speedo drives are typically a plastic cog that is driven by a worm gear on the diff - but of course there are other methods. No matter, the drive connects either to a cable, or more likely an electronic transmitter.
Either way, failure of the speedo drive causes intermittent speedo function, but doesn't contribute to noise.
Any experienced mechanic can determine if there is a wheel bearing fault, but this can't be determined by spinning the wheels yourself - I use a stethoscope (screwdriver stuck in me ear :mrgreen:) on the bottom of the suspension strut and this never fails. I'm just hoping this is a possible fault with your car!

No wheel bearing faults per the people at Halfords... I'll double check the tyres - why do you ask?
 
Its only my opinion, but having used Maxxis tyres on a couple of vehicles I have been thrown by the noise they can make.
One example was a Skoda Fabia VRS - I was convinced it was wheel bearing drone I could hear. Wrong! Tyre noise.
The next was a BMW X5 - put new rear axle bearings in to no avail, and even rebuilt the goddam diff. Wrong! tyres once more.
A typical wheel bearing problem manifests itself by becoming noisier when you steer in one direction, initially. Obviously, this has no effect on speedo performance at all.
