My desktop machine whistles when it is doing virus scans or defrag. The tone is continuous and does not vary so I think it is a sounder not a mechanical noise. Sometimes it will be interrupted if I open files on the disk. i have three hard drives but it seems to happen on the C-drive which is a Samsung HD082GJ SCSI (or it might be a WD80, I can see the three disks but can't see which is which).
The noise does not start until it has been running for maybe 20 minutes, so I wonder if it is heat-related.
