By some quirk my wife managed to put a cloth with white spirit in it in the washing machine. It ruined the other things being washed and the machine smells to high heaven. Any ideas please to get rid of smell.

Boil Wash with detergent ( may have to be done several times ) Should solve the problem. As white spirit is quite volatile a nice boil should shift it. Afterwards leave the machine door open.
In my time as a washer repair man I must admit I never came across this before :)

I always wash my white spirit soaked sponges in the machine with the bortex and oxygen bleach. My machine never acquires a white spirit smell...

If yours has like they suggest just do an empty boil wash in it, or better yet do an empty boil wash with some nice perfumed washing tablets.

I'd do it on a boil wash with a couple of shovels of oxygen bleach instead of some perfume detergent, but I don't know how white spirit would react with it. "Oxygen bleach" is very similar to hydrogen peroxide so I don't think it will do any harm but you should ask a chemist lest I be responsible for your deaths :D

I think Jim and his wife have a "new" washing machine now Mr Bodge,, 'cos that post is nearly "7 years old".
Never mind,, we've all made that mistake before..
