Avril 'acquired' a whitewood timber three drawer unit. Just bare timber, so it will need either to be painted, varnished, or waxed, none of which are in my area of expertise, so what to do, and what to use, please?

My way of doing it would be to,

sand the wood down to smooth it and open the grain for better varnish penetration finish with 220-grit sandpaper then clean the surface
use a natural brush to apply a thin even coat of varnish brush in the direction of the grain and allow it to dry then lightly sand it with 220 grit sandpaper before applying a second coat
apply 2–3 coats for durability lightly sanding between each coat to keep the finish smooth.
