I have a large rectangular planter at the bottom of my garden full of sand. I want to turn it into a shrub area but will take hours to remove all the sand. Is it ok to get the majority of the sand out and top up with soil and compost?

So if we said there would be about a foot of sand left and then about six inches of soil and compost on top of the sand. Would that be ok?

Yeah, shouldn't be any sort of problem, just class it as a free draining soil, i can't really think of anything that would be overly upset by it.

Sounds a bit like my entire garden except the soil is a little over a foot deep and I don't have a problem. When I built my workshop I used some of the sand removed putting in the foundations to stick the brickwork together :D
