I have a 4 bed timber frame house built by Wimpey approximately 1986. I would like to fit a balanced flu gas fire in the lounge, however the wall on which it would fit and where the gas supply is has a timber frame stud straight down the center. Therefore to keep the fire centered on the wall would mean the hole for the balanced flu would require cutting a section out of the stud. Would this be permitted.

I doubt it without doing a fair bit of structural work to strengthen where you remove it. You would probably be better off asking an installer ( gas safe eng) or maybe the supplier. I'm not sure how close the flue could be to the timber frame but would a few inches off centre look that bad.

Yes probably, no different to where a window or other opening would be created, you would typically double up the vertical studs either side of the opening and lintel over your opening with a double joist say 200x50 each eg

Technically it's a structural change which would require Building Control Approval.
