Billyo, either this is a wind-up or you have been confining yourself to the city for too long. Travel in any direction from my house and within 30 minutes you'll come across them!

Large power stations can be located remotely ( accepting the extra loss in longer transmission lines ) and not intrude on the vast majority of the population in the way that a multitude of wind turbines would do.

TV news has just said that the present Off Shore plans could mean on turbine every mile along the coast. I didn't hear the full report.

But calculating (estimating statistically ) how to get over 90% of the UK electrical need for 90% of the year with present UK wind profiles could mean over 30 million large turbines would be needed and spread around the UK. That is one turbine for every two people in the UK.

This sort of NIMBY like idiocy is being encountered in a multitude of places where there are moves to place wind turbines. Why don't governments understand, we should be building coal power plants near the houses of poor people, not disrupting the view in our rural life style!

The "birds caught in the propellers" argument is possibly one of the more stupid to be used by NIMBYites in opposing wind turbines,

Bolo .dont know where u live but we live of the cumbria coast and they are extenting the wind farm as i write. there is over 100 turbines to look at. and in dont look Holland, more like the pumps in Dallas WE ALSO HAVE THE BIG SELLAFILED 20 min drive away or 15 as the wind blows . u go 30 min drive to see turbine , we look out our window but as long as we keep green , wots 300 turbine to look at blocking up the irish sea. they got to go somewere, but not on who's doorstep

Perhaps I misread you billyo, but I got the impression that you had none in your land area, but that they were on the cards.

Not to forget the nuclear submarines and the 2 reactors at Heysham. You mean windmills ones off Walney? Better out there than up the tops above Ireleth, they are an eyesore!! The ones by the prison are a bit dominating, still imo better than the Ireleth ones. Some noise comes off them too!! Then theres the one they built in the local Tesco carpark, they have a problem with it killing birds!! Just be carefull when diced chicken is on offer

Anyone who thinks that wind power is anything but a Green party crackpot scheme is seriously deluded. To be viable we would need so many that the landscape would be littered with them ... Who wants to live like Windy Miller

If we must have the damn things why on Earth don't they build an island in the middle of the North sea and stick them all on that

Give me nuclear any day of the week ... France has it spot on.

If we all hang around for a minute Coco will explain why ...

1. We can't have nuclear because we can't dispose of the waste.
2. That oil is almost run out.
3. That there is no other alternative (and never will be).
4. That the end of the World is just around the corner.

Be interested to look at the carbon footprint of these turbines from manufacture, installation and maintenence to see if they really make a difference. The only info I could find was about domestic turbines.
