If it's an opening timber window, they usually have screw hinges; remove the hinge screws & the whole opening frame should come away from the main frame. Is it double or single glazed? Putty or beading? If you need to ask, I would advise you call in a local glazier; are you not insured? 
First floor window, working from ladders, not knowing what you’re doing etc. etc. could be a recipe for disaster or even a spell in hospital!
