Window Lintels

The alteration plans for my house involve a span of 3.9m (door and window) which need to be covered by a new lintel. This is proving to be a bit of a problem as it's a bit longer than average and the builder is suggesting that we cover it with 2 H beams bolted together. This means complications as one of the H leafs will sit outside the brickwork, meaning that I have to go for cladding/render.

Anyone got any links to lintel suppliers or advice on this? How much longer that the aperture should a lintel be?

Cheers
JD

The lintel need to be re-cut and re-weld to the correct length unless the return wall is less than 450mm.If your outside wall house facing brick then you can bed on the slim brick type onto the lintel.

Masona, thanks for the reply but I'm afraid I don't understand what you're getting at. I will need a new lintel as the span of 3.9m is bigger than what is there now. Essentially we are butting a door up to an existing window. So I don't think there's any welding involved. Any idea where can I get a lintel to cover this span? What is a return wall?
Thanks again

Sorry, I should've been more clearer,

When you say " will sit outside the brickwork " do mean length or width ?

The " Return wall " is where the end of each side of the lintel rest on which should be a minimum 450mm wall depending on the stress load.

If the alterations are structural such as removing part of a structural wall in which the alterations involve the insertion of a beam or lintel will affect the stability of the building, then a Building Regulation approval is required.

You should get advised to seek the advice of a structural engineer, architect or building surveyor who will advise you on type of lintel which involves calculation stress load.

Sorry, but a builder cannot do this for you.

You can use a CATNIC CN8C that will span up to 4.8m assuming you have a 50-65mm cavity, get your local building merchant to check with CATNIC to make sure it can take the load where you want it installed, CATNIC tech are usually very helpful. Using this lintel will allow you to carry your brick work through, cut it down to size making sure you have a least 150 mm bearing on each side.
