At the risk of asking a really stupid question - we have a small network of 5 computers which are all currently running windows xp. We want to replace one of them and as almost all new pcs now come with with Windows 7 pre-installed we are looking at getting one with that OS. Will our computers be happy on a network together when one is running windows 7 and all the others are running XP?

I've not had a decent night's sleep since I joined DIYnot!

Will see if I get any other responses here, but if not, i'll take a look at your link - cheers.

Windows 7 will work with an OS mixed network. I've installed a few and had no issues (My primary qualifications are in Computers/Networks).

If you do have some problems, send a message and ill happily talk you through it.

Yes...People ask questions & get good answers & they even write code for you.
When I was working & got stuck, it was amazing the help I received, I was even amazed that with my knowledge I could give good tech advise.
I think there are forums & forums.

Being that there's a lot of servers on the internet running Linux OS and all other OS's connect with them, , I'd say your new Win7 will communicate just fine with your existing network.

Yes it will but it may need some tinkering with, the security settings are different between XP (great OS, IMHO) and windows 7 (which has security problems)

Why would it need tinkering with to simply exist on a network?

Because windows 7 and xp have different security profiles. That's not to say they're incompatible, just different.

And he misses the point by several parsecs.

Then again, you think XP is a great OS, so..

Dunno Monkeh, XP was one of the better offerings from Mr Gates & Co
