I am in Australia. I have taken old light down, there are 4 wires, red, black, green and white. The new light has only 3 connections, live, neutral and earth. Where does the white go?

Sorry, no idea.

I've been to Aus a few times and as far as I could tell the electrical codes are a bit like in the UK. I could hazard a guess as to which conductor is earth (but it's just a guess). I do know that in the UK we had red, blue and yellow as phase colours, but you have white as a phase conductor (Instead of the yellow we would have in the OK)

So I would guess (don't trust me on this) that the green is earth.. I would also suggest you find a local electrician, as this forum is UK based so we don't know your regulations.
