So I live in a quite large L-shaped bungalow. The living room (where I want the stat) is at the short end of the L; the garage, with the boiler, is at the end of the long bit of the L. And of course, the boiler is right at the far end of that.

I calculate that the signal will have to travel through 6 walls – all block – to get there. Is this going to happen, or should I give up now?

Thanks :D

You have some chance with block walls, but it's far from certain. Can you get it below 6 walls by careful alignment of windows and doorways?

The wireless stat doesn't talk to the boiler itself, it talks to a relay box connected to the boiler via cables, so you could position that relay box a lot nearer if you can get longer cables through to the boiler.

Thanks guys, that makes it a lot clearer. I think then what I'll do is get the plumber to run a cable up through the attic to just above this room, put the relay box there, and the wireless stat on the wall in this room, a few feet below it :mrgreen:

If it’s a Salus then you could still have problems! Get a decent RF product - Honeywell is my favoured brand.

Bear in mind there may come a time when you'll need reasonably easy access to the receiver if the system starts playing up.
Either just to override the thermostat and get the heating going or to check for faults.

OK, bit of progress here. Think it was a different thread I explained this in, but here in N Ireland they have a scheme called Affordable Warmth for people on low income, whereby the Housing Executive pay for some improvements – so I’ve just had a foot of insulation in my attic, complete replacement of the old heating controls etc with modern dual type, 16 TRVs, 3 rads etc, all for free {embarrassed smiley}

Anyway, the down side is they have to do it their way – and wireless ain’t included. So now I have a wall stat in my hall, where I didn’t want it, but at least it hasn’t damaged the wall (wire goes through diagonally to the airing cupboard, then up into the attic).

So once they’ve inspected and paid etc, I want to install a wireless unit here in the living room. One question… is the new stat they’ve fitted a simple switch that makes and breaks a single circuit? And would the receiver for the wireless kit be the same… in other words, a straight swap?

Thanks :mrgreen:

Maybe; post a photo or tell us the model number to be sure.

Thanks... can you suggest a (not too pricy) one please?

Reading reviews online, I get a bit confused... the ones mentioned seem to combine the thermostat functionality with that of the timer, and I don't want that - ie, I don't want this thing to be able to switch the heat on when it's programmed to be off, eg in the middle of the night...
