I am looking to replace a standard 4" bathroom extractor fan with a pull cord, which has become faulty, with another pull cord model which has the addition of a humidistat function.
I am getting conflicting advice. Because there are a number of different models in the Manrose range, some with timers, PIR functions etc and there is only one Manrose document covering the installation and wiring.
I wrote to Manrose technical support for clarification. I received a fairly quick response by email which said, in the body of the email , that this model required a switched live in addition to a permanent Live (which my wiring does not have). They also provided a link to the installation manual which referred me to diagram 2 for wiring this model and which shows only a permanent live and neutral. I have been back to Manrose for clarifcation but so far this has not been forthcoming. Has anyone here installed that particular model and can give me an answer? Many thanks.

I assume that the "pull cord" you refer to is integral with the existing fan and not mounted separately elsewhere. In this case, why do you think you don't have a permanent live? Is the present fan switched on/off in with the bathroom light, or is there a remote switch that you use to control it somewhere else? If not, and it works manually by just using its integral pull cord, the live you have will be permanent.

There are two versions of the Manrose fan with humidistat / timer:

1. With an integral pull cord that is switched on/off as required. This version just requires a permanent live and neutral.

2. The other version is designed to operate in conjunction with the bathroom light (or other remote switch) so it requires a switched live (e.g. from the bathroom light) a permanent live to keep it running if the bathroom light is turned off but the humidity level, or timer dictate is should still run, and a neutral.

I see you are new to the forum, for future reference, you have posted in the 'Your Projects' forum which states at the top:

Therefore, you may find that the mods move it to another forum such as Electrics UK.

Thanks Stem. I think I placed my bracketed comment in the wrong place in my initial post. Currently there is a permanent live but no switched live and, yes, the pull cord is integral to the current defunct fan.. However you have clarified that the Manrose model I am considering has no need of a switched live so I will go ahead and order.

Years ago, I fitted a manrose humidistat fan. I ran it off the ring via a fused RCD FCU. I cheated and took the live and split it to create a switch live and permanent live. The fan only required the perm live for the humidistat but I wanted to be able to flick a switch to remove smells as required.

Hello.
The humidistat fan needs a switched live because there is no way to isolate it locally at the fan because it is automatic.
So you need to have a separate pull switch installed for manual isolation (or a high level fused wall switch outside the bathroom).
Other fans with timers or PIR (or humidity sensing) would all need a live and neutral to run, whether those live and neutral are switched separately are of no concern to the fan, only wiring regulations.

You say 'Has anyone here installed that particular model and can give me an answer?' but not provided that particular model....

Basically in a nut shell just throw it in and it will be fine lol. But if its got no pull cord there should be a separate means of electrical isolation.

I don't understand your post.

If a humidistat fan is only running running via the perm live, there is nothing to stop it having an isolating switch. Having a switched live running in is not going to prevent the humidistat potentially going rogue and running when it shouldn't.

My bad explanation, I mean - if the fan has a perm live it may not be able to be isolated. you would want a switched live either switched from the light switch (not required if the fan is humidity controlled) or switched by a wall isolator outside the room
