Wiring ceiling rose probs

Hi

ive removed a standard ceiling rose and tried to replace it with a normal bathroom type light. Simple l & N connections not 3 brass connectors as is usual.

I have 4 wires showing, 2 red 2 black and i cant get the light to work. Playing with it at one stage i got a permanent light on but tried every variation i can think of with little success.

Please advise me of what i need to do to sort this thanks alot.

One Red is permenant live, one black is permenant neutral. the other 2 go to your switch. You need to invest in a multimeter. isolate the lighting circuit by turning the MCB off. CHECK FOR ANY LIVE WIRES BEFORE CONTINUING. Switch the light switch to the on position. Using the multimeter on a continuity test, put the probes together and note what the display tells you, this is the indicator for a dead short. Use the multimeter to find a dead short between a red and black wire. When you find one, turn the light switch off and check that you now do not have a short between these wires. Now find some red tape and put some on to the black wire you have just identified as coming from the switch. now connect both reds together and put the black to the N pole of the light and the black with red tape to the L side of the light.
