The switch that turns on my cooker has stuck and won't turn off. After removing the cover to check why the switch would not operate, I noticed that the green/yellow wire which I believe is the earth was not attched at all to the socket cover. My oven is a built-in type with a hob above it and I am wondering whether in this type of oven the earth cable is attached at the rear of the oven housing and not to the plug socket on the wall. My cooker manual suggest that there are two ways of wiring either to the wall socket or to a control box situate behind the cooker housing. Does anyone know if it is likely that with a built-in oven, the earth wire has been connected behind the housing (out of sight unless the oven housing is removed) and that in such a case there is no need for the green/yellow wire to be attached to the cooker box socket - if this is not likely to be the case can anyone confirm exactly how the cooker box wall socket should be wired. The other four wires (two red ones and two black ones) in the cooker box are attached to the cooker box cover. My oven is a Creda Winchester.

If the wire is there it should be connected to something. Id suggest it is either an error on original installation, or something came away when you opened it up.

Is the oven fed by a 13A socket, or a fixed connection box (a bax with fixed terminals?) In the latter case I'd expect it to be fed from an isolator switch. If in doubt check the earthing with a meter - if it can be wrong here, it could be wrong further back too.
