Hi, a friend has removed his old switch, ditched it and tried to fit the one in the images. He did not photographh the old one before removing it.

I can see he has both neutrals in a henderson block so obviously wont work but also note he has two live and two neutrals and it seems two earths although i cant tell from his picture if one is a yellow wire and one earth?

Would it just be a case of fiting both black and blue wire into the L1 and both red to com with the earth in its correct terminal?

Thanks in advance

If they are both neutrals (one cannot completely rely on colours), then that would be 'normal' if neutrals were present ('being looped') at the switch.

Kind Regards, John

If the light is permanently on, which i think it must be,he needs to separate the reds into the com and L1 terminal on the switch. The neutrals are fine. Are you sure the yellow is earth ? Or is yellow the switched live to the light ? If that's the case the wiring should work as is. Apart from being a mess !

Also, tidy that exposed wiring on the switch terminals.

i THINK A BETTER PICTURE IS REQUIRED !

Regards,

DS

Thank you both for such quick replies, he sent the picture over social media, had to brighten it a bit so i could make out the wires, ill be seeing him later today, yes your right it needs tidying I did message him for a clearer pic but he's out in the sticks and relies soley on his phone data (no broadband) so not had a new pic yet. I will check the yellow at the light fitting if theres any doubt its the switched live, can't say until i get there.

Does one of the cables have Blue Red and Yellow ( and Earth ) and the other RED and BLACK.

Is the switch one of two ( or ) that operates the light.

If yes to both then most likely the wiring is Yellow to COM, Red and RED to L1 terminal, and Blue and BLACK to L2 terminal.

Hi Bernard, great point, I will indeed check what is coming out from each cable and hopefully determine which is the most likey setup. Thanks again, cant thank this forum enough sometimes, always greatful that people like yourselves take time out to help

It's difficult to see exactly what is but I can see three terminals so I'm guessing 2 way switch (there is another elsewhere operating the same light).

It all depends on how the other switch is wired up.

Basically, the other end of the common wire in the other switch needs to go to common in the switch in the picture.

The wires in L1 and L2 in the other switch need to go into L1 and L2 in the switch in the picture, along with the red and black from the T&E (one in each).
