My staircase is wobbly. It is about an inch away from the wall (by design) but it moves as you go up it and you can shake it by hand. It is freestanding with no risers.

Will there be something at the top that has come loose? I'm not too keen on ripping up the floor to have a look unless I know what to expect.

Is it possible to put a spacer in and bolt it to the wall to fill the gap? I'm going to be decorating anyway so a bit of mess isn't an issue.

Or would it be easier to just get a new one fitted? Any idea on cost?

i suspect this staircase was never particularly rigid in the first place.

does it sway a lot?

Yes, it does sway. Has done since i moved in. I don't minnd but the girlfriend is convinced it's about to fall down.

it is lacking in stiffness/rigidity. i would think you would gain little by trying to fix at the very top or bottom of the staircase.

is there any way of fixing mid-rise to the wall?

No, there's nothing apart from top and bottom.

I was hoping it would be possible to drill a hole in the side of the staircase and put in some packing and bolt it to the wall to stabilise it.

Or just get a new staircase, any idea how much that would cost? Just a basic staircase with banister.
