The very bottom standup on the ground floor of our staircase is a bit wobbly, how are these usually fixed to the floor?

do you mean you newel post is wobbly?
these are either mortised or dowelled into the stair stringer.
it could be fixed to the floor with screws and plugs on the skew.

Yes the bottom newel post, the rest are fine as they have two bannisters at right angles to support them.
THe bottom one looks to have movement as its only supported from one side. I have access to under the floor so will have a look there for any fittings.
