OP,
The verge(s) are not the problem.
A pic of the roof abutment with the wall might show something - its only a possibility but worth a look at how the abutment has been flashed?
FWIW:
the staining on the render below the parapet capping is possibly due to:
1. the coping stones are not wide enough to throw off water and
2. the drip channel under each coping need raking with a flat screwdriver - raking will clear any blockages in the channel.
3. maybe the mortar perps & beds are failing.
The fragile membrane gutter is actually a back gutter & should have been built & lead flashed as such.
Thanks. I'll ask the neighbours to let me go round with a ladder to photo the abutment, measure the coping stone overhang and clean the drip channels. Once I have, I'll post here. It may not be until after Christmas, though. How would we know if the mortar perps and beds are failing. I'm not sure which gutters you mean, or what a membrane and back gutter are. Google wasn't much help either. Which gutter do you mean, and what needs to be done differently? Thanks again.
OP,
You examine the beds & perps by looking at them - do they look fit for purpose? Or lightly probing them with a flat blade screwdriver.
Your back gutter is behind the parapet wall.
Search my recent past posts & you will find lots of ref's to what BG's are & how they should be built.

The beds and perps seem robust when checked with a flat-head screwdriver. There is a crack in the pointing near the drain, as shown in the first photo. Could that be an issue? The only pointing problem appears above the door frame, shown in the second photo, which crumbles slightly under the flat-head. However, we haven't had any leaks here, so I don't know if we need to address this. How would we know if the membrane gutter is the problem? I want to solve the water ingress problem, but I can't afford to incur unnecessary expense.
OP,
Still no pic of the abutment flashing?
My reference to a back gutter & the render defects below the parapet coping were FWIW items - simply drawing your attention to such defects - I was not saying that they were somehow responsible for your leaking roof
