Hi

I'm going to fit a sash lock to a new door. I've done this previously in the past using a hand, brace drill, but no longer have it.

I was after some advice on what power drill bit to use, and any tips when using one as I don't want to damage the door. I will practice on a bit of older timber first probably!

Thanks for any advice offered.

a spade bit will do, the mortice tidied up and squared with a chisel afterwards. Use a fairly slow speed and take great care to wedge the door so it stays paralell to the angle you are drilling. It is very important not to wander sideways and come through the side of the door.

Withdraw it often to clear the chips. Mark the required depth on the shank with sticky tape or paint.

The auger bit gives better control that a flat bit, but if you use flat bits drill in steps to avoid wandering and jamming.I drill four corners first with a 5-6 mm hss bit as corners are hardest to clear. Then clear , tidy with a wood chisel.
This is a useful bit as it cleans out the hole quickly and cuts forward, backward and sideways, but can be difficult to conttrol.

thank you for your replies, I appreciate your advice so much. I have a power drill (240 volts) is this ok? Or do I need a cordless drill on 12 or 18v?? I just want to make sure. Thanks again.
