Wood floor treads on stairs

Hey, i have just recently sanded my stairwell and have found that the wooden foot plates have had some sort of carpet down and painted around the edges.
As i sand i have found that the edges become lighter than the middle (Where the carpet has been) i cannot find a way of making the wood look uniform....Please any suggestions

Wood bleach then stain to suit. The two part A plus B type bleaches are what you need
