Can anyone explain why we have one brick on an outside wall , surrounded by Wood (looks rotten) instead of Mortar.
it is on the first floor .
None of our neighbours have one. is it ok to get re-pointed.
the house was built in the 1950's.

Wood in joint was used for fixing things as hammer drill not invented yet...

Well I don't think there was one in 50s?

Yes, they look like wooden wedges hammered into the brickwork joint to fix something to.

Stand back and take a picture of the whole wall so we can guess if it was a gate, a lean-to, a shed, or what.

OP,
Simply use a hammer, & a large flat blade screwdriver to hammer, split and prise the wood out. Then remove & clean the bricks and re-bed them with mortar.
