Hi,

I'm looking for a 1-way single light switch in oak. I found one at http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_In...ndex/Wiring_Accessories_Wood_Index/index.html but they only appear to have 2 way switches.

My understanding is that 2-way switches are for use where you want to switch the lights from 2 switches, usually at each end of a room. Can I wire a 2-way switch up for 1-way use?

Alternatively, does anyone know where I can get a nice oak 1-way switch from ?

Cheers,

Phil

This is a very clear diagram of how light switches are wired up:

http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/MK/WiringDiagrams.pdf

So you can see, as il78 says, that if you use C (or COM) and L1 in a 2-way switch you've got what a 1-way switch does.

You could use COM and L2, but then the switch would work "the wrong way round", i.e. up would be on and down would be off, like an American one, unless you mounted it upside down 8)

Yep - got it! Thanks for your excellent information and the joke  Phil
