Hello, i have some wooden wall paneling that as contracted since we have had heating on in the house, it's not been lived in for ages and not decorated for 40 years so you can imagine how damp everything was. I originally used a painters caulk but now there are big splits forming between each panel, Is there any product of your you recommend, the splits are approx 2mm wide.. Thanks :)

Use wood filler or car filler for the larger gaps. You can use white filler (Polyfilla etc) in a pinch, and for small gaps and gouges. Then sand smooth. Caulk is generally for people in a rush, it serves no purpose if you want a quality finish.

If you fill a gap with hard filler (mixed) and the wood contracts more or expands due to damp, atmospheric conditions etc , then that also will split. The reason the caulk has split will probably be because the timber has still been drying out and has contracted. Also if the timber was raw and unpainted then caulk wont stick to it very well. A primer needs to be applied first then the filling done. Caulk is used for the very purpose of being flexible so will give a little if the wood moves. Its got nothing to do with being in a rush !
