Why would it be dangerous?
A suitable acid descaler would help, such as the crystals variety of kettle descaler. It's the primary side , which will be black, which is more likely to be critical.
Pour boiling water in the tapwater side, to speed it up.
Garden hose full blast befpre and after also helps.
Why not whilst your at it, take out the primary heat exchanger and descale that as well. I left both in to soak over night in fernox lime scale remover when I did an old chaffateux combi, worked a treat after, no more kettling.
