I'm having a bit of trouble with my hot water. In a nutshell, if the central heating is on, or has just been on and I attempt to run the hot water tap, after a while the hot water will run out and turn cold, the boiler will start making a clanking sound and the water will turn a brownish colour. If I leave it until the heating is off and has been off for a while, then everything is OK.

This only happens with the hot water tap, and when the heating has been on for over an hour or so. It was fine at first but this problem first reared it's head last winter, and has just started to do so again now.

The gauge had read at over 3 bar for the past 2 years, but this is not an accurate reading as I have taken radiators off while redecorating, and heva yet to refill the tank.

Any ideas?

At least your expannsion vessel is knackered, and there may be other problems. What model is it?

24CDi.

Strange thing is that this only seems to happen with the hot water tap, and in the winter when the heating has been on for over an hour or so. It almost seems as if there isn't enough hot water in the tank to heat the radiators and be used from the tap(s) simultaneously.

You say it's a combi boiler. What is the tank you are referring to?

If the hot water is becoming discoloured that it sounds as if the secondary heat exchanger is leaking!
