We have a small 2 bed flat with 6 rads and a Worcester Combi 24i boiler installed in main bedroom. Rads have thermostats and when heating is on and rads are hot a 'drilling' type of sound frequently starts. This is random and can happen 2 or 3 times an hour, or not happen for days. As soon as we slightly increase or decrease the temperature on the thermostat of the bedroom or living room rad the noise stops. We now have to leave the thermostats at half setting when we go out so that the noise does not disturb neighbours, but the rads are then cold. It is particularly a nuisance during the night if the heating is on. Does anyone know what's causing this and is there a solution?

stats are chattering when closing

if they are not bi directional make sure the flow is with the arrow on the valve body

sometimes closing the locksheilds a little helps

also the makers reccomend you have 1 rad without a stat

They are bi-directional and we have already tried closing the lockshields a bit. The bathroom rad does not have a stat. Is there anything else we can try?

Could be expansion noises.
See if you can pin point the noise to one area and check pipes are not rubbing on floorboards , joists etc :D

Could be you have poor quality trv's the bi directional ones that BG originaly fitted were pants.

Had similar problem but traced to one rad in particular. tcv was on return end of rad, but was bi flow. swopped to flow end and fault cleared.
