I have some new pressure treated half round fence rails. They are going somewhere a bit remote so I'd rather they lasted well. Is it worth giving them a coat of something, if so what? Ideally animal friendly if they get a bit chewed.

Not if they are treated properly, waste of time, if they are not treated properly then it is still a waste of time. ;)

You could slap some treatment and sealant on cut ends (if you cut them to length, which you should avoid if possible), cut ends should not go in ground.
