hi guys i realised after fishing some cat5e cable around my building that there appeared a few kinks. Basically the cable must have gone into a small loop and straightened out leaving a kink. The sheath seems fine and there isnt any sign of extensive damage but was wondering if this would hamper performance?

thanks

Yes, kinks in CAT5 cable can cause reflections, therefore reducing the performance dues to packets having to be resent. Before you go ripping it all out though, I would say just try it and see.

Do you have access to a CAT5e/CAT6 certifier? That will be the only way to tell if the cable is damaged.

What speeds are you planing on running on this network? 10/100 you will probably be fine, Gigabit and kinks will cause grief i'd say.........

yes by what switches & NIC's you use, your most likely to be on 10/100. Gigabit is becoming more & more common however(many PC's now ship with Gigabit NIC's). (NIC-Network Interface Card).

Well the PC side of things i am going for most optimal systems due to the nature of the business i.e. heavy graphic design

oh dear, the worse answer possible! Heavy graphics you want a FAST reliable network, DIY was not really the best option here i'm afraid. If you are going to be pushing huge amounts of data i'd be calling in a network installer NOW and getting them to certify this install, most places will do this for around £250-£400 a day, how many outlets are there?

The issue is, ive practically run out of money that was allocated to this premises of mine. I set a budget and ive gone over board due to some unforseen circumstances and i havent even got my reception counter in yet.

But lets say for example, that although the pc's are very powerful would they still be able to operate at reasonable speeds i.e. better speed than wireless regardless of whether a gigabit is achieved or not?

What sort of data will you be sharing on the network? 10/100 speeds will be better than wireless but if you are transfering huge files then you really want a fast network. The network is the most important part-this is what frustrates me when people spend lots of money on equipment but want the network for nothing-it's the bit that ties it all together!

To be honest I had a side budget set for the network which im sure was healthy enough for an above average network but since the downstairs floor collapsed and a few other little issues, we really pushed past the budget.

The data to be shared is predominately vector art but in cases 3d illustrations. Its generally illustration work done via photoshop, illustrator, lightwave 3d and 3dsmax
