Apologies for asking yet another Nest question.

We have just moved into a new house and the missus has decided that she wants Nest installing. No problems with buying it and paying for it installing. (I have no desire or knowledge to install it myself) however, she would like the room thermostat to hang on the wall where the current manual thermostat (Potterton PRT100) sits

She "doesn't want wires showing and everyone will be able to admire it on the living room wall"

I understand from googling and looking round on this forum that the manual thermostat runs on 240v and the Nest runs on 12v so just a straight wire swap will leave me with a round black brick.

What I would like to know is if the wiring that powers the existing thermostat can be utilized / rewired to power the nest thermostat without expensive drilling holes in walls etc.

I'm hoping one of you kind people can help so that before I buy it, i can be sure the installer can do what she is wanting.

Managed to establish our setup (apologies as this is a bit alien to me)

Potterton PRT100 thermostat - (Living Room)

Hot Water Cylinder - (Upstairs in Airing Cupboard)
Mid Position Actuator - (Upstairs in Airing Cupboard)
Grandfos Alpha 2 - (Upstairs in Airing Cupboard)

Baxi Barcelona Boiler - (Downstairs utility room)
Potterton EP2002 - (Downstairs utility room)

Happy to post any pictures / wiring diagrams if required.

Please be gentle

Regards

Rob

Yep, it's fine to reuse the existing wires - I do it all the time

Funny how we assume the that posters have a bit of savvy when it comes to working with electricity but the last poster I tried to help had his immersion heater connected to his nest thermostat  so no more thermostat posts from me.

So we had the guys from Currys Knowhow (I know ! but we had a giftcard so it wasn't costing us anything)) come round to fit this. After an hour of doing whatever they were trying to do, they informed me that they couldn't fit the nest system because the wiring centre in the airing cupboard upstairs didn't have a permanent live feed and that the live feed was downstairs next to the programmer. If we had a permanent live feed fitted in the airing cupboard nest could be fitted but they wouldn't be the people to do it.

Does this sound reasonable or have they fobbed me off because it may have been a bitch to fit and its Friday afternoon.

Currys rarely know how... you do need a permanent Live feed for Nest but with a bit of rejigging of the existing wires it's almost always possible to use one core to get a PL to the junction box.

Thanks. If we would be happy to have the thermostat powered by USB / mains instead of being in place of the old wired thermostat, would they have been able to put the heatlink in place of my existing programmer ?

So we had the guys from Currys Knowhow
Unless your installation is 100% exactly the same as some fictional installation they had 10 minutes to glance at in a training manual, Currys and similar installers will be of no help whatsoever.

Find someone who really does know what they are doing - most of the time Nest and similar devices are a simple installation including reusing existing wires for the 12V supply.
