Hi. I live in Portugal, where it is very hot now, 33C. I have a Zanussi fridgefreezer, ZRD28SC, just out of 2 year warranty. It is not chilling the refrigerator cabinet properly, about 15C instead of about 8C. The motor works hard, but there is a big build up of ice on the autodefrosting back plates. The local shop said to defrost till the ice melts, then switch on again. I did that for a couple of hours, but no difference. There is also a problem with the thermostat control, as I always thought that 6 was coldest, but the local shop says 1 is coldest!!
Help please, Bill Ure

1. take out and eat the food.

2. let it defrost for 48 hours with the doors open until it stops dripping and is dry (mop out the evaporation dish at the back).

It is probably clogged with ice in the frost-free channels. thsi is very common if it is a frost-free freezer. They are hidden inside the panelling at the back and take a long time to clear, once blocked. 6 hours is not enough.

if it is the fridge section then maybe you have got it turned too cold so it is constantly running and the panel does not have time to melt.

check that the door seals are closing tightly and the door is not being left open and no wet things are inside it without covers. these all contribute to excessive icing.

verify that it is not standing where sunshine falls on it

after you had manully defrosted it and dried it out inside, how long did it take for the back panel to get covered in ice again?

Hi John, thanks for your reply. I have already done 1!
The evaporation tray at the back is completely dry, and does not look as if it has had water in it for weeks.
There is a problem with the thermostat control, as I always thought that 6 was the coldest, but the local shop says that 1 is the coldest, so it has been on 2 for the last few days. Can you tell me which is which please?
After I defrosted it for 2-3 hours, the ice reformed on the back panel within 3 or 4 hours.
The doors seem to close OK, but I did notice a couple of months ago that when I had been in the fridge, there was a suction on the doors if I had to reopen them, which had not been there before. Since this frosting up problem, there is no suction on the doors. Surely in a 2 year old Zanussi, the door seals should not have gone already?
Look forward to hearing from you, Thanks,
Bill Ure

Hi,
Thanks for the link you sent, but I am finding that in every way Zanussi have a completely useless customer service, and as I bought the fridge in
Portugal, it does noy officially exist!
Thanks anyway, Regards, Bill

Sorry I can't help but I wondered if you solved your problem? I have a similar problem with my (older Zanussi) that is also logged here (ref getting below 9C) i.e. ice building up at the back but struggling to get down to temperature and I think the compressor is always on.

I am on the verge of ordering a replacement but have wondered if it is my thermostat somehow. Also I might wait to see if it improves when the weather cools down.

My fridge is currently at 6.5 C which is not too bad. Strangely it has gone down quite quickly since filling up with food a few hours ago. I do not understand why it would have done this? (Edit: This might be because my wireless thermometer sender got pushed towards the back of the fridge whilst filling - 2 degrees difference from the front to towards the back?)

Hi.
I think I am making some progress. The Zanussi technicians finally came back from holiday and say that it needs regassing. However it is not as simple as that, as it also needs the gas ducting rerouted??? This in a 2 year old fridge. Anyway they have taken it away to fix, and I hope to have it back tomorrow for a mere 150€ (£130).
The lowest temperature I could get was 14C, which is well outside the safety limits.
I would never, ever, buy another Zanussi product. I rang all their service lines in UK and Portugal, and the only thing they were interested in was money."If you want to book a service engineer, please have your credit card handy. If you subsequently cancel the booking, you will be debited £40".
There is no technical service, where you can ask your questions, just
(very pleasant ) girls taking bookings. Also nobody could tell me which thermostat setting was coldest, 1 or 6. The girls thought 6, while the local
Zanussi agent thought 1!!! I have, incidentally, trawled Google, Ask,
Wikipedia and Alpha Wolfram, and nobody has the answer to that question.
Hope this helps, haha, regards, Bill Ure

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking mine might be the gas thing too but as mine is old (over 10 years) it is not worth it.

For what it is worth, with mine, 6 is definitely the coldest setting.

The story carries on! They just brought it back, and have had to replace the whole motor as well as the gas ducting! Luckily for me they kept to the original quote. Do they Friday afternoon fridges, like cars? Last point, I hope, 1 is definitely the coldest, and in summer it should be run about 2!
Once again, NEVER buy Zanussi,
Regards, Bill
