Zanussi wash machine drain filter constantly contains water

Hi all, I have a zanussi zwf 1231 washing machine, lately after every wash, I have to open the drain filter and empty a jam jar worth of smelly water. There is no debris like coins etc in the filter...should the drain filter always contain some water ?the wc has 2 pumps, I managed to open both and the impellers look fine with no debris...the impellers spin ok to the touch, Any ideas what I should check next?

There is always a little water left in the filter!
To avoid a smelly washing machine do a maintenance wash regularly & keep the soap tray & filter clean.
