Can anyone advise on the likelihood of what this is. Occasionally the dishwasher is completely cold at the end of a cycle and the dishes aren't cleaned, sometimes it works fine. Could it be the element or something more complex?

Its Likely to be one of the following, heater relay on main circuit board or dry joint solder joint on circuit board or connection to heater or circuit board is burning out.
