Painting voted the nation’s favourite hobby

Baking and knitting are no match for painting when it comes to finding out the UK’s favourite craft hobby.

Retirement housebuilder McCarthy and Stone surveyed their customers to find out what the UK’s favourite craft is, with painting, bread-making, wood-turning, embroidery and baking among the 16 available skills to choose from.

Painting came top of the traditional crafts, with 16 per cent of the vote. Baking came second (10 per cent) and cooking was third (eight per cent).

The favoured craft in each McCarthy & Stone region is as follows:

  • East Midlands: Painting
  • North East: Painting
  • North London: Painting
  • North West: Painting
  • Scotland: Embroidery
  • South East: Baking
  • South West: Knitting
  • Southern: Wood-Turning
  • West Midlands: Baking

The survey comes alongside McCarthy and Stone’s 40th year celebrations. In January, at the start of its anniversary year, McCarthy and Stone pledged its support for Royal Voluntary Service and the charity’s annual ‘GrandFest’ event.

Throughout June and July, the retirement housebuilder is inviting people all over the UK to celebrate the heritage skills of older people.

All are welcome to join staff and homeowners at selected McCarthy & Stone developments for GrandFest, a very special event which will put the spotlight on accomplished older craftspeople – or ‘GrandMakers’.
