Hi folks

I have a Potterton Suprima 40 with the ignition faults these boilers seem to suffer from. So rather than throw good money after a bad product it will probably get replaced.

My questions is which make/brand of boiler is the 'best' eg, recomended or to be trusted/reliable in your experiences? I know only condensing boilers are availible and many people have tales to tell on these.

Thanks your your input.

You have to fit a condensing boiler now.

There is no best boiler just as there is no best car!

Hi its not so much the boiler as the installer. There are obviously better boilers than others but your main objective is to find a good fitter.

Even with the best installer you can't take away that condensing boilers seem to suffer from the very two things they're meant to cope with. That's the effects of primary water and acidic water from the products of combustion. They can all perform, for a while, but are all of sh*t build quality and now a throw away item.

There is no out & out best boiler, every installer has their own preference, mine are Atag & Viessmann, don't fit anything else personally.

And there I was thinking that Silverback had given up installing boilers and taken a day job!

What made you think that?

I worked as Technical manager for a Thermal Solar company for a couple of years to ride out the reccession, but back on my own again now

That last reply is untrue. There are excellent quality boilers available now.

The trouble is that anyone who mentions the name of a good quality boiler on this site is immediately pilloried by the sort of people who posted the last post!

However, the facts of the matter are - and I mean facts, not opinions - that Viessmann boilers are superbly well built, and Viessmann are for that reason the biggest heating manufacturer in Europe.

There will always be someone with a disaster story, but that does not mean that all modern boilers are rubbish, far from it.

There are no disaster stories, just fact, not opinion that the build quality of boilers is less than it once was. If it wasn't the OP's question wouldn't be asked so many times a day on so many forums by so many people. Nor would manufacturers boast having 400+ engineers to attend to warranty claims or a culture develop whereby insurance is now essential to avoid massive spare parts costs when failures occur.

The after sales of our industry used to be about servicing and safety checking with the odd repair. Today it's about direct debit premiums, breakdowns, claims, parts changers and compensation. This wouldn't be the result if quality had improved.

can't say i would get rid of a suprima for a condensing boiler myself. the suprima is simplicity itself, most condensing boilers are not.

Yardy yardy yah fekkin yah yah, they "all" come out with this "our boilers are best europes number 1 biggest maker" advertising crap, Worcester "the installers choice" they don't say "which" installer, funny that, I have been an installer for 40 years now, they ain't my choice so a big fat lie there then, really gets on my tits this "were the best" there all crap, some is just better crap than others.

Basically it's like cars, if it's British French or Italian, it's crap, if it's German it's better qaulity crap with expensive spares, but you won't need them quite so often, if your lucky and paid a proper guy to fit it.

Of course then there is the Aluminium stainless steel argument..................

I install intergas boilers. I do so because i think its a "good" boiler.

Unlike many here I believe they are good reliable boiler on the market today... but customers & installer have to be willing to pay for them.

Forget finding out what the best boiler is, and start looking for the best installer for the job; any decent boiler will last should last a long time if installed correctly.

That is a complete non sequitur. I get many people asking what temperature to set the roomstat to, does that mean roomstats don't exist, or temperature can't be changed?

+1 Keep the suprima. Probably another 10yrs in it yet.
