IR testing a USB socket.

When installing them, what about using a deeper box, and wago connectors so the socket is on a very short spur that you can disconnect with ease while keeping the ring connected?

(I am a HMO landlord, and the USB sockets are now being used a lot in HMO bedrooms!)

I personally don't think it is a brilliant idea to add unnecessary connections in a circuit just to make (occasional) testing slightly quicker.

If the manufacturers would only make all these USB sockets shutter-switched, then the problem would go away.

On a EICR I would state L-N as a limitation and just to L+N to E.
On a MWC I would do the same... you never know what else could be connected anyway

On an EIC I wouldn't have to worry as a new circuit I installed wouldn't have USB chargers fitted:p

The DP Switch fused connector unit also saves power wastage whenever the USB sockets are not in use.

Wouldn't that introduce another connection though?

It would, but they would be permanent factory-produced connections and, more to the point, would not have to be undone/re-done for testing.

So would shutter-switched USB power outlets. Also, has it no occurred to you that some people might want to draw more than 13A total from a double socket - the 13A fuse in an FCU would probably allow 20A to flow for quite a long time, but it's hardly good practice, and the fuse would probably get very hot.

I wonder if these USB socket-outlets have passed the temperature rise test in BS 1363?
Probably not necessarily! As an example, the MK K2743 claims compliance with BS 5733, IEC 61558-2-16, IEC 61000-6-1 and IEC 61000-6-3, but no mention of BS1363.

... which, of course, might be taken to some to indicate that they may not be connected to a standard ring final circuit, unless one reduces the OPD to 20A :)
