    Heated Towel Rail recommendations

Any recommendations for the best brand of heated towel rails in terms of performance and build quality etc? We'll be using them as electric-only, so will need to add heating elements (any recommendations for these too?). We want curved white ones. Just standard ladder type ones - nothing...

    Boarding with laminate boards

I've a loftspace and a ceiling to board out. Between the joists is PIR insulation, and over the joists is going a thermal laminate board of 40mm insulation + 12.5mm SE boards. This board seems quite stiff, do still I need to get the board edges lined up on joists (like you have to with single...

    Partially building your planning permission

I live in a 1950s 3 bed semi. I would like to extend to the rear (kitchen/diner) and eventually - once money allows - to the side (study/utility/garage and a master bedroom above). We might end up selling the house before we have the funds available to build the side extension, but would like...

Guide price for hanging an external wood door

I've bought a new solid wood/oak door and am looking to get it hung. I'm supplying the door, the 3-point multi-point locking mechanism and the handles. The existing frame will stay and will need the new locks cut into it (the existing lock is just a simple single yale). The new door...

What do you think is the best way for a DIYer to fix thin coat angle bead to dot and and dabbed board? Staples/Screws/Adhesive? --- long waffly explanation bit --- Staples A site I found suggested staples were the best. I've tried with some 12mm T50 staples and my staple gun, and...

    BT junction box

Quick question... trying to tidy things up during renovations. Can I replace junction box 1 (shown in the image below) with jelly crimps (internally)? It is currently rather unsightly with the black BT cable entering the window on one side of our hall window, through an internal junction...

    Walko work benches/stations

Has anyone any experience with these? http://www.walko.nl/producten.html I started out looking for an alternative to a B&D workmate, and just started going higher and higher in the price stakes. These appear cheaper than Festool, and possibly more versatile. Just wondered if...

Boiler gas inlet 22mm vs 15mm - why?

Chatting to our plumber today and he said he'd noticed how "European" boilers (ATAG, Viessmann, Vailant) all have 15mm gas inlets, but Worchester Bosch has 22mm. Why? Could it be that on the continent mains gas is supplied at a higher pressure, so 15mm is sufficient?

    Undercoat on Dulux Trade paint

Under each colour in the "Dulux Trade Professional Colour Guide" it specifies a colour of undercoat. It seems silly, but is this a requirement? Dulux Trade don't seem to stock "Silver Grey" undercoat as a standard premixed colour. Am I going to have to pay through the nose for colour...

20mm oval conduit & metal back boxes

Hi, I'm moving a light switch in my hallway and am having issues marrying the 1G 25mm metal backbox (with circular rubber grommet) to the 20mm oval conduit. With liberal use of some pliers and a bit of shoving I can force the conduit in. However I was wondering if there was a better...

I shall soon be tiling my new bathroom - 30x60cm tiles onto hardiboard. Just got a some (alot) of questions: If I'm not concerned with the curing time (I'm not in a massive rush) do I need BALs "rapidset flexible" over "single part flexible". Should I be concerned about tiles not...

Apologies for asking this again, I've spent the evening reading the forum and have almost got the answers - I think I'm renovating a 1930s semi, I've the walls back to bare brick but need to move some light switches and add sockets. The new electrics will all sit under D&D plasterboard...

    Where to buy an ATAG?

Our plumber has been unable to get a price for an ATAG A325EC from his suppliers (Graham-Group), but has said if we can find one he'll fit it. I've found them for sale at MyTub and PlumbPlanet, but do people know of any other places? Once I've got the price I just need to decide if I want...

    Cleaning brick prior to DnD

Sorry for the poor photo, I can put a better one up this evening if needed. I've removed all the plaster/render from my living room walls with the intention to PVA and Dot & dab them. Question is how clean do the walls need to be prior to this? Do I need to scrub them down with a wet...

What shower for combi (thermostatic vs pressure regulating)

Thinking of getting a Vaillant Ecotec plus 837 installed. I've been told a pressure regulating shower is the best to have (Mira Combiforce/Combiflow). I'm unsure why these would be better than a thermostatic. What difference would I see "in the real world"?

I'm currently doing up a 1950's semi. I'm planning on replacing my existing boiler with a condensing combi. Existing radiators will be replaced on the ground floor except for the kitchen where a wet underfloor system is desirable. First floor radiators will also be replaced except for the...
