Our boiler stopped functioned properly after we had a towel heater moved. We cannot have just hot water and have the heating turned off. The heating seems to be on all of the time even in the hot water only setting. A plumber took one look at the boiler and seeing that the switch did not seem to be working, said it would need a new printed circuit at a cost of £180 + VAT and labour Over £400 total. Does anyone know if this sounds like a circuit problem or might there be another solution? Thanks

Well I wouldget another engineer for starters. Even if it is the PCB charging £188 to change the PCB is extortionate even for London.

If you mean the boiler is firing for heating even when the hot water tap is off, then it would indicate an electrical problem of somesort.

If you mean hte rads warm up when the tap is running then it is a diverter valve problem.

Is the bottom neon iluminated on the front of the boiler (right hand side)?

Some plumbers are like that, you'd think it would occur to him to see if it was ...

Thanks. The bottom illuminator with the radiator symbol does not seem to be illuminated, but the 2 above it are. The boiler is firing for heating even when the hot water tap is off.

No, the DHW switch is faulty and tells the boiler there is a demand for hot water but as there is no flow through the tap the heat is dumped into the radiators instead.

A common fault. The part is about £20 and we would charge our standard fee of £84 plus the part but that includes a basic service.

Then it thinks the tap's on.
This picture was already on file, so if you search you should find us wittering about it before.
It's likely that the red gland has leaked water into the pink switch, which is stuck. Well worth poking, pro tem.
DHW = domestic hot water = tap stuff.

Big brass thing, left of centre behind the flap down front.

Perhaps not!

The one that usually fails is the miniature microswitch.

Because of the design even when the gland leaks it often does not spoil the microswitch.
