DOn't try to cut all the way through the olive or you'll risk damaging the pipe. Stop short and use a sharp screwdriver to twist in the slot which snaps the olive. I usually use a penknife blade - run to and fro a bit it deepens the slot.
Ive always used the hacksaw method or the adjustable spanner method depending on the situation. Checked out the olive pullers here They are bottom of my shopping list right now, but when I do feel the need to cart even more tools about I will remember ChrisR's advice
