How do they know, that without the death penalty in certain states, the statistics of murder and mayhem could be through the roof. Impossible to know.

As well as the fact that America can not be compared to the UK in terms of murder rate, neither can you compare society here with how it was in 1965.
Since then, there have been far more violent films, and also increasingly widespread pornography via the internet. Some people are more prone to commit offences such as murder when exposed to violence in film and on tv.

Without getting into all the pros and cons, all I will say is that if anyone murdered my wife I'd want to see them hang.

On the other hand, if they murdered my mother-in-law...
