Zanussi electric grill-all or nothing heat adjustment issue

we have a Zanussi built in oven with electric grill admittedly quite old and trying to grill stuff is a nightmare.

There seems litttle temperature control in that the electric grill is either red hot (when turned up high) and burns the food being grilled or its too cool (turned down to anything below 150) and doesnt grill it hardly at all.

could anyone give me a clue as whats causing the prob?
