Is it just unsighly when copper pipes turn green on the outside, or do they degrade to any significant level?

copper does go green over time.

you must have seen copper antiquities retrieved with a green discoloration.

if you are concerned about some copper pipework specific to yourself i would recommend you clean it up to prevent any further corrosion & paint it with an appropriate solution.

Clean them right away!!

The installer hasn't wiped off their flux after sweating up, and it will eat through your pipes.

The green is copper oxide, and a sign of corrosion. Get some steel wool and clean it off

That's the case if it is by the joints. It can also happen in a "damp" room. We have a drying room where we dry clothes and the pipoes went green v quickly.
