Hi

I've bought a house and a couple of the double glazing units need replacing. They are still mounted in the pvc window frame - how do I measure for replacements.

Also is it just the width/length I need or do I need thickness.

Many thanks
Terri

Yes, you do need to measure the thickness because, if the thickness, of the new units, is more, or less, than the originals, the new units cannot be easily fitted. The thickness is likely to be around, say, 28mm, ie, 2 x 4mm thick panes of glass, with a "spacer" 20mm thick. The spacer is likely to be coloured, ie. silver, bronze or black, so the supplier needs to know the colour for suitable matching. The height and width can be measured by removing the glazing bars, ie, the "snap in" angled securing members which may be fitted on the outside (externally glazed) or inside of the pane (internally glazed).
There has to be some expansion/movement/drainage gap between the recess in the frame and the width/height of the DG unit but, if the original DG units were fitted and sized correctly, you will see packing and spacing blocks around the DG glass panel and the new unit should be fitted in a similar way.

Thanks that's really helpful. Do you know how I would remove the 'snap in" angled securing members? Would I use a screwdriver to ease it out?

Many thanks

Yesterday I watched my units being replaced.

They used the flat of a 2" wallpaper scraper to prise out the lower right side of the internal rubber gasket from the frame, and removed all four inner gaskets in the same way.

This allowed the d/g unit to be pushed in away from the external plastic glazing strips.

They then inserted the flat of the wallpaper scraper between the upper right of the vertical external rubber gasket and the external glass pane, and pulled the scraper gently downwards to release the gasket from the glass.

The flat of the scraper was then used to prise the upper right plastic strip from the frame (being careful not to damage either),repeating the same action to leave the lowest external gasket and strip in place.

This finally allowed the top of the unit to be leaned outwards and removed.

Learnt something yesterday :D
