Hi hope every one is having a fab xmas.
I am about to refub our bathroom. Last time refurbished approx 20 years ago(before my time in this house). Question i have is all the walls are tiles floor to ceiling. Tiles are well adhered to the walls and very flat. Tile size 15cm sq. I would like to tile over the current tiles. Please advise:
Is this a good idea?
How best do i prepare the tile surface for new tiles.
Many Thanks

in my opinion, the best results are remove all tiles and then start afresh.

a lot of the answers given on thos whole forum can be found on google, but people just dont bother.

Besides, this is a forum, not a Q and A service

Interesting thought Breezer - I suggest that the "forum" has become just that in many cases.

A lot of people* think this is a Q and A place, its not, its a forum. The Cambridge English dictionairy defines a forum as
Cambridge English Dictionairy said:
1 a situation or meeting in which people can talk about a problem or matter especially of public interest:
a forum for debate/discussion

There-for, anyone can reply to any post with what comment they like, providing it stays within the forum rules. It is then up to the person reading the post if they wish to believe the opinion of the reply or follow the information in the reply

* Including "regulars"

 googling wins again then

Actually before I moved into my current position I was a working director in the family building company. As well as plumbing and heating I also used to get involved in the tiling side of bathroom installations as we had trouble getting a reliable tiler who would work to the standard that we required. The link came from my bookmarks folder.

I also oversaw a refurbishment of 15 en suite bathrooms in a local hotel and the professional tiler that did the tiling tiled over the existing tiles where it was more practical.

There's no problem with tiling over existing tiles so long as you:
1) Ensure the tiles are spotlessly clean before you start.
2) Don't overload the substrate - in the main this is rarely a problem.
3) If using a pre-mixed adhesive, allow sufficient time for the adhesive to go off before grouting.

Mike, there's no need to key the tiles in order for the tile adhesive to stick to them.

Didn't even know I'd written keyed in my first post. I thought adhered as I typed it but the fingers are faster than the brain as usual.
