Hi
I have a 2 way switch covering 2 seperate lights in my livingroom. 1 switch for one light the other switch for the other. These are not low voltage but mains. I have just bought a Dimmer 2 way switch to replace the original switch but do the same thing. On the back of the original switch the wires are coloured Blue Yellow and red. The Blue goes into one side of the switch and the yellow the other side. The red wire goes into the same side as the blue and links the 2 switches together. The confusing part is the red wire is red until it gets near the switch and then connects to terminal block and then changes to earth wire as is the link.
The dimmer has 2 switches with connections at the rear marked C,L1,L2. How do I wire this switch up.
Obviously the power will be disconected at the breaker box before doing any wiring.
Thanks

This should help, if not let us know

Hi Pensdown,

The original switch does not look like this at all. It looks like nothing ive seen before. However correct me if im wrong but from the 3 wires I have coming from the lights the red is Common, yellow to L1 and Blue to L2. Do i need to link the common together on the dimmer switch. What about L1 and L2? Do i need to link them.

The red should go into the both commons so you will need a red link between the two.

The yellow is the switched live to one light and the blue is the switched live to other.

To keep it simple put the blue into one of the L1's and the yellow into the other L1

You don't need any cables in L2

If the right hand light ends up being controlled from the left switch just swap the blue and yellow around.

If the new dimmer is metal you will also need a flying earth cable from the back box to the dimmer plate.

Please remember to turn the power off first.
