Cost of a boiler gas valve?

My boiler is an Ideal Classic SE15FF.

The pilot light and fan come on but the boiler isn't starting up.

Had a bloke round and he said all the circuit boards are working so it must be the gas valve.

He went away to get a price. £170 for the valve which he had warned me would be expensive.
Says its because is some duel voltage or switching thing. I don't exactly know, it was a very bad reception.

ANyway does this seem about right?

No price is right or wrong. It is what the service engineer tells you, whiv=ch you then accept or reject.

He has to call and inspect your boiler, deduce what is wrong, go away and get the part (time consuming itself), come back and fit part, commission the appliance and warranty the work.

Sure you might be able to get the part cheaper but then again you will not have the professionalism or the knowhow to carry out the required task. Indeed you can carry out the gas work (if you are competent) but then again your insurance company may think different.

If you do not like the price, do tell the fitter not to bother. £170 would seem right for the gas valve at retail price.

Well lets put it this way its 78 quid dearer than what i would pay for one.

Tell him to go and take a fek to himself. You can get it done for 192 quid including parts from Scottish gas.
Not the easiest of valves to fit but still only take 45 mins.

Even Ideal would be around 200 quid

Not having a clue about boilers i was only asking a question. Not by any means accusing the guy of trying to do me.

Retail is £131.83 + VAT at Parts Center.

I would then charge £80 + VAT for fitting it.

I don't think he is miles out if £270 is all in.

Any other gas valve you are straight into and swap it. For these you have to remove the burner and work from there back over and down through the casing. A nightmare without any MI's to tell you where the screws are and how to get at it. I can't remember exactly but I think I charged somewhere around £250 including an initial visit to diagnose and an hour long journey to collect the part

why do people say they would charge X amount for fitting then pretend the part cost retail, When we all know that is not what they pay.

Why not just say what they actually want to make on it

As a customer it would take me 2 mins to finds out the cost on the internet and then i would probably not use the person again purely for lying to me.

so even retail they would be charging £157 quid for 45 mins
we pay £92 inc then £7 quid next day delivery.

Oh yeah and the hassle of ordering it i forgot about that 2 minutes on the phone and delivered to your door thats got to be worth another 50 quid.

Why do people try and justify rip off prices

Retail cost covers the risk of the 12 month warranty given on the new part.

What else is going to pay for the time taken if the part goes tits up.

The manufacturers certainly wont.

It also depends on whether you charge yourself out as a wage or as a business that makes a profit and you take a wage from that business I think.

I don't class charging a published retail price as a 'rip off'

So why say retail why not be truthful and say i want X amount. money is money whether you call it profit or a wage
