Like painting, using silicone needs a couple of things.
Dry, clean surfaces.
The right type (and not the cheap diy crap) of silicone.
Follow the instructions.
A fairly steady hand to apply the silicone evenly.
Diluted washing up liquid to keep your fingers wet when evening out after a while.

Obviously if you want to do it professionally you have to get a professional!
The first reply was unusual because the trick is apparently to mix up something and put it down again but you dont seem to have to use it after making it !

have to admit them fugi kits are awsome. did a couple of bathrooms with them the other week. there a god send.
"Pampered Chef" do a stoneware pan scraper that has the exact dimensions needed to get a perfect finish on silicone sealant. It even looks similar to those fugi kits. They have 3 radiuses on them and one 90 degree corner.
I discovered this by accident but they do make a near perfect finish.

aint you heard of the windolene trick?
I never have used & don’t need any gadgets; they invariable leave a thin film residue either side of the bead which eventually starts to flake at the edges making the whole thing look untidy.
It’s easy to watch someone do but rather a difficult thing to explain. Cut the nozzle at an angle & to the size of bead you need; squeeze the trigger with a constant pressure & draw the gun away from the bead, don’t push into it. The single biggest mistake everyone makes is pulling the bead too slowly when, in fact if, you should run the gun as quick as you can to give a constant size bead. A bit of spit on you finger to smooth over or, if you don’t like the taste of silicone, dip your finger in a cup of water with a few drops of washing up liquid in. Once you have the confidence to try & master the technique you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.

put as much as you like in gap spray on some windolene along the whole area then use finger and go along join the mastic ( silicone) will only fill gap it wont stick to windolene leaving a perfect filled gap...try it its like magic
do not use spit or water when smoothing it will cause mould growth in a very short time.
wipe with a dry finger and some paper towel to remove excess off finger as you go perfect finish everytime!

Never, ever, ever heard that one before
. There is nothing in spit or fresh water that will, in itself, cause mould growth; mould is an airborne fungicidal spore that exists naturally everywhere & relies/thrives on moisture to multiply. Take away the moisture & the mould dies but once it’s there, can easily come back unless you treat/kill it. Have you got some sort of super infected, extra terrestrial spit! 
There is absolutely no way on this earth your going smooth a bead of silicone if you stick a dry finger into it.
