Hi can anyone help-
I am converting my garage into a ganesroom for the children (which had been previously used as a bedroom by the previous owners) but it is freezing in there so I am assuming that there is a single skin wall and no insulation.
There was an old crumbling bitumin floor which we have taken up-
What is the best wa ti insulate and damp proof the room as it for the kids and needs to be warm?
Any advice apprechiated Thanks
Louise

how has the roof been insulated?

tape a piece of clear plastic tightly to the concrete floor and see if water forms on the underside of the plastic - if so the concrete floor is damp and probably lacks a DPM. This affects what you should so with it.

I would be thinking in terms of a drywall lining with insulation behind it, It is fairly easy to do with timber studs screwed to the wall and plasterboard screwed to that, with insulation between the studs. Ply sheathing can also be used and is impact-resistant, but is flammable, which plasterboard is not.

The ceiling has been insulated in between the joists in the attic space above with fibre glass combi roll to recomended depth

Will put some plastic onto concrete floor tonight and let you know tomorrow about that

recomended depth
do you mean 250mm, 150mm, 100mm or 50mm? the recommendation has changed over the years

Not sure now! It was only done about 6 months ago so I would imagine to the newest recommended thickness but I will check that as well tonight and let you know

Is there anything else I can do to further insulate the roof space?

will be useful to know if the roof is felted as well as tiled - this will affect condensation risk

ok will find that out too and get back to you later tonight when I get home
Thanks
Hi John-just looked at insulation and it is just the depth of the joists also roof is not felted
done the plastic on the floor and there is no condensation so guessing that there is already a damp proof membrane-
what else do you think I can do to insulate the floor

Unless the floor is very uneven you can simply lay insulation board down and put a tongue & groove chipboard floor onto that. It might not be a bad idea to put a damp proof membrane down under this lot as well, just in case.

Some insulation backed plasterboard over the ceiling joists would be useful too.
