Some poor bloke has been killed practising the 'luge' run.

Why make the olympics (albeit Winter ones) so bloody dangerous, entrants are killed practising?

Why not hold the 2024 olympics in Nigeria, Chad or Niger? Put a bit of danger into it eh?

I shall not be watching anymore... its left a bad taste in my mouth.

It's one thing to watch people who have a natural talent, and who have trained to realise their full potential, and pushed "health" and "fitness" to the limits to achieve it.

It's entirely another to watch someone take part in something which is inherently dangerous, and the only thing that 99.9% of the viewing audience will be able to "understand" is the stopwatch. This is why I can't watch motor racing on TV - it makes no sense whatsoever without commentators and a load of numbers blasted up on the screen!

A lot of people watch 'dangerous' sports for the thrill of expectation, meaning they want to see close encounters, wether it be 2 cars vying for position at breakneck speed or someone going down the luge.
However, I honestly don't think anyone wants to see someone get injured, much less killed, by doing something they are obviously dedicated to and have spent most of their life practising to perfection.

Motor racing is vastly different though. The driver know the dangers he/ she faces.

I have no doubt the fact they face death the moment they sit in the vehicle that will hurtle them around a circuit at break neck speeds.

Quite agree!

But that's the trouble though. A bit like sending troops to other countries, only to be shocked to discover that they not only have to kill someone, but also tend to get killed themselves.

You obviously dont watch/ have been on a motorcycle then ;)

So, tell me honestly. If there were no numbers up on the screen and noone commentating, then are you telling me that you'd know what's going on just by the tv pictures being shown?

With regards to F1 yes, I could follow most of it because the livery on the cars tell you who iis who but you would still need numbers showing to show things like fastest lap times, pit stop times etc.
Not saying I would enjoy it half as much but I could generally follow a race.
Best commentator for enthusiasm/knowledge has to be Murray Walker but even he could make mistakes.

That's amazing.

That's amazing.

Not really if you follow the sport.
Commentary does make it more enjoyable but just look at the people who watch an important football game through a shop window when out shopping with their wives/girlfriends.

I suppose so, but on the whole footballers aren't exactly endagering life and limb out there. To my knowledge a shin guard is the only protective equipment they need.

No footballers don't endanger lives but I was trying to answer your question;

To be honest, I can't follow football even when there is commentary, so many foreign names in an english team?
Defeats me.

Indeed you were. For some reason I thought I'd try to bring the discussion back to the thread's topic, although not with much subtlety

There is absolutely no dangerous sports or activities just inexperienced or naive people doing something they should'nt.

I would rather go on a luge than cycle on a busy road.
I'd rather race a motorcycle than ride it on the roads.
