Thanks to all who have contributed to my dhw problem.

I have reached the stage where my plumber suggests a diverter valve replacement for which he will charge £145. We used the check on the heating pipe below the boiler to reach this conclusion. I note however that AcidTechno had a similar problem and described on another thread that neither a new diverter nor heat exchanger solved it.

The fact that ollski suggests that I might need a new pcb causes me to hesitate before proceding with further work until I'm sure of it's value.

So a couple more questions please.
1) Is a boiler engineer likely to be any better than a Gas Safety registered plumber in carrying out a diagnostic check?
2) To AcidTech regarding his similar problem. Have you solved it yet?

Finally an answer to tdesnos who asked if my problem started after the diaphram change. Not exactly. Before it we could get no dhw whereas now we get some for a while.

Yes. The ACS qualification that we all need to work with gas and appliances doesn't go into a great amount of technical detail about the appliances themselves and how to diagnose faults. Most Gas Safe people I know or have worked with only use their registration to install, don't carry multimeters or even differential thermometers and usually just tell customers to get the manufacturers/BG in if they're called in to a fault. Or 'have a go' and swap parts in a trial and error, and costly, fashion. A boiler engineer will have the tools and the talent to swiftly diagnose your fault and, depending on what the fault is, some only charge a one-off diagnosis fee and fit any parts that may need changing included in that price, plus the cost of the part, obviously.

I have a sneeky feeling that its as simple as your thermistor on the HW side, which can be tested before fitted.
I personally would go for that before divertors or PCBs for the cost efficient route alone.

Meanwhile nogoodatfaultfinding's tip to replace the thermister seems worth trying. Could you explain how you test it please and is the replacement a layman's task?

Not yet. I've bought a thermister on ebay, will have a go at fitting it and report back.

Make sure you change the water one and not the heating LOL ive seen this mistake being made before.

Water thermistor is on the brass divertor, heating is on the copper flow

Sorry, delayed reply due to my only having fitted a new thermistor just yesterday. The result? No change I'm afraid, the water still cools off after an initial hot burst.

So what next. Could change the diverter I suppose but maybe calling in a boiler expert would be wiser.

Thanks for all the suggestions offered. I may not have solved the problem but I sure understand my boiler much better.
